Well before Eric Clapton made "Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs," he worked with Harrison on Harrison's "All Things Must Pass" album. Patti was often neglected by Harrison, who was known as the "womanizer" of the Beatles. Harrison was getting deep into religion, adding to the neglect. Clapton and Patti would flirt and smaller stuff, but Clapton was falling deeply in love with her. At that time, Clapton was recreational in cocaine, and would get it easily in Miami where "Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs" was recorded. The cocaine would be sold with heroin too, but Clapton wouldn't use it because at that time, they were afraid of it. After nearly every song in "Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs" was directed at Patti (especially Layla), Clapton told her she was whom the song was about. She pretty much shrugged him off. This devestated Clapton and he threatened that if she wouldn't go with him, he'd delve into heroin. He wasn't bluffing and spent the next 2 1/2 years addcited to it. After cleaning up, Clapton and Patti resumed their slight affair. One night at a party, Clapton boldy told Harrison "I'm in love with your wife, and I'm going to take her. What do you say to that?" Harrison responded "Ok, you can have her." Of course Patti was present for this exchange. She left Harrison and married Clapton. They eventually divorced. Some irony is in Clapton's "Slowhand" album where in "Next Time You See Her," Clapton says if another man is seen with his woman, he'd kill them (the humor being in that he had stolen another man's wife). The most famous songs that were inspired by Patti are "Something" (Beatles), "Layla" (Derek and the Dominoes) and "Wonderful Tonight" (Clapton). Some of the most famous songs in rock history were caused by this one woman.

Clapton, Harrison's 'best friend', fell in love with her, nay became obsessed with her. Harrison was getting deeply involved in spiritualism with the Hare Krshna's and his Indian Hindu pals. He had little time for his marriage, i guess. Clapton, who had only known one night stands and drugs and loneliness, swept her off her feet, had an affair and then she broke it off. Clapton became a heroin addict, locked in his house for a couple of years, before Patti was ready to break free of Harrison and marry Eric. Interesting story yes?

She left him for Eric Clapton. George and Eric remained friends and called each other "husbands-in-law".
