In my yr 11 chemistry course I've been asked to copy out a figure titled 'A classification of matter'. In the fig. matter is divided into two sections 'homogeneous, eg. muddy water and concrete.' and 'heterogeneous, eg. copper and air'. Could you please define 'heterogeneous' used in this context for me as definitions on the internet are highly generalized.

homogeneous: it has a uniform composition throughout
ex;salt in water
heterogeneous:it is a mixture that consists of physically distinct parts each with different properties
ex;oil and water

Muddy water and concrete are classified as Homogeneous since their composition is fairly uniform when sampled at different locations. Copper and air (for example an open jar with some copper turnings or copper coins in it) is a heterogeneous system, since there is an abrupt change from copper to air and vice versa. Heterogeneous means separately identifiable in this context. A group of people are homogeneous but a group of people and animals is heterogeneous. Separation of heterogeneous systems is easy, homeogeneous systems are difficult to separate.

Well, a homogeneous mixture is one where it is well mixed or a pure substance. A heterogeneous mixture is one where it is not uniform on a large scale. Copper is homogeneous because it is a pure substance. Air is homogeneous because it is made up of gases, which means that they will mix together. Muddy water would be heterogeneous because it contains particles of dirt or sand which are visible and seperate from the water. Concrete is also heterogeneous because it contains rocks which can be seen.

Water and mud mix. Copper and air don`t mix.
