In the '50's, I spent all my time having to learn to spell correctly, and being grammatically correct - at least to the extent that you can teach a child of 7-10.
But when I see the adverts from multinational companies with basic spelling mistakes, I am horrified. I can cope with the apostrophies being in the wrong place - most people can never get their heads fully round this.
But when BT put out an advert with 'there' instead of 'their' - something I learned at 8 years of age - it makes me wonder what the world is coming to.

To me, something like that is just sloppy and shows they employ people who are just not worried what they churn out.

If the info comes across, today's people are not too worried about spelin. But at the end of the day, does it really matter?
I have listened to arguments that we should preserve the English language. But then again, that is composed of Latin, Greek, French, German, ad nauseum.
What do u rekon?

I pride myself on being a good speller and also on being grammatically correct. If that is where your head is at, don't change. Take pride in your attitude. If people here either misspell out of choice or because they really never learned how to spell correctly or because they are lazy, it is NOT YOUR PROBLEM. You don't have to emulate them.

Well, a lot of foreign companies use auto translators when creating ads for other countries, which is why it would be there instead of their. The translator isn't perfect with syntax. And yes, though it is compiled of many different languages, the English language should be preserved.

Spelling shows a degree of intelligence. I can understand the quick messaging notations, but not in formal or business situations.

If you ask me, spelling isn't taught enough in schools these days. Children from the age of 5 rely to much on "spell check" on their computer.

My teacher used to say: "Readin', writin' 'n' 'rithmetic should be taught to the tune of the hickory stick."

There's no excuse left, we have spell check, so I think it's just carelessness and lack of interest. (By the way, I used spell check to make sure "carelessness" was spelled right and it was! A+ for me.)
