after booting up the pc gets to just before loading windows (xp) then crashes and sits there with a black screen. the screen goes on stand by to. After a short time it may restart.

I tried running ubuntu on it to same problem dosnt get very far before the pc dies.

Anyone got any ideas?

Sorry forgot 2 mention there is to copys of windows on there. Each on seperate hard drives and they both seem 2 have the same problem.

Tryed Frost Gothic's idea i cant even get as far as the screen 2 do that!

Sounds to me like you have a memory problem. Replace the RAM or use a utility like memtest to test the ram.

2 possibilities i see here:

a) make sure no cd is inserted in cd-rom drive when booting up
b) your windows registery is messed up and this is more or less a common issue with Windows. ( it is used to happen to me once in a month )

Solution for this: insert the windows installation cd rom into the drive and boot up the system. Just right when it starts to boot up press F8 or F2 ( depens what computer you have ). then try to reinstal ( not repair ) the windows.

If the problem did not resolve after reinstalling the windows just do the same but this time go for the option ' format c: '
let it format partition c: and then instal the windows from the begining.

I am 100% sure the problem will be wiped out then.

Or third option (added to what Frost answered) is that your motherboard is on the way out!!

Try another video card or monitor.
