i'm good at drawing single realistic objects, like i'll draw a realistic male figure on a blank canvas and detail the heck out of it(most of my work is drawn in photoshop). then when it comes to making a landscape or a background, i get lazy because i don't like drawing landscapes, i'm kind of obsessed with drawing people, particularly eyes and faces. i feel like most of my drawings are more like clip art than full compositions. when i do attempt to make backgrounds, i never know where to start or what to make, and i wind up with a background that is of much lower quality then my figure. in many cases the people and background don't even look like they belong together. any advice?

Backgrounds don't have to be detailed dear. Just don't leave blank spaces, watch the tangents and blur the background as if you're a camera focusing on a subject. Look at some photos and see how the backgrounds are really just that....backgrounds. The focal point is the key. The rest is gravy.

try looking at pictures of people in parks and among other landscapes and rendering them. with this practice, it will give you some ideas on how to pull everything together and make it seem much more realistic.

practice just drawing landscape pictures. without people in them
then when you get those the way you like them think of the type of person that would fit in the landscape...not the other way around...person then landscape
