Doesn't that prevent you from salvaging or creating beauty in your own marriage?

You are right, hanging on to the past for the benefit of being of a power trip, could turn fatal. If the spouse made mistakes, I am sure the power trip has made the spouse suffer enough already, and anyone can take only so much. Better to get back to reality and the beauty of marriage, forgive and forget. Remember the marriage vows, and keep them.

No, I don't. I've forgiven him for many things, just as he's forgiven me. Forgetting is not as easy, but we both realize the power that knowledge gives us, and make an effort not to hold it over each other's heads... even in anger.
Holding on to past transgressions does prevent salvaging what's remaining in a marriage and finding the beauty that you were overlooking.

I hate holding grudges, but I'm guilty of it. I never use it to hold power over my spouse, because I would hate to appear "petty" or like I'm keeping score during arguments. It's just not my style.

But I do allow it to negatively affect my personal opinion and feelings toward him. And I agree with you. The negative thought process of holding onto the past does keep me from being deliriously happy with him. I need to learn to let go.

Marriage without complete forgiveness and selective memory
loss will never work..
Let bygones be bygones...
No revenge..
No dredging up past sins...
Either divorce her or forgive her...
And move on...

Yeah, if you're an attorney, I'm Nicole Kidman.

And if your wife acts hurt, its because you hurt her. You don't get to decide when she should move on.
