Although the east coast is a bit closer the beaches aren't as nice (in my opinion). West coast beaches have whiter softer sand, calmer water, beautiful sunsets, etc...
Even though Orlando is considered "Central Florida" it is closer to the east coast by about 45 minutes (no traffic).
Cocoa is Orlando's closest beach but it is also advertised all throughout Orlando as it being the closest beach, and they have a bunch of tourist shops everywhere so it is designated more towards the tourists, you'll also have to pay like $6 (give or take a couple) for just a one way trip (toll road 528).
My favorite beach on the west coast is Sand Key Beach (in Clearwater), very nice area, gorgeous beach, and very family oriented (but not swarming with families), plus you don't have to worry about a toll road.
Like someone else mentioned the Don Cesar on St. Pete Beach, very beautiful if this is more a romantic getaway, definitely would recommend it, my mom actually got married there to my step-father.
Personally February is still a bit to cool for me to be heading back to the beaches only because I'm a native Floridian, but plenty of people for the north or the UK have no problem going to the beaches at this time.
Hope I was able to help some, and you enjoy your trip down here!
If you need more info on the beaches I listed their links below...

P.S. Bring some loose change for parking meters at the beaches...

Great Answers but a lttle more info.... True Cocoa is the closest beach... the Atlantic Ocean is a little colder and has waves/surf. The Gulf of Mexico is about 30 minutes further and is warmer with little no no waves.

If you are going early in the day... before sunrise.... then East coast is fabulous to eat breakfast along the water and watch the Sunrise.

Late in the day the opposite.... West Coast and a coctail at Sunset....

My reccomendation is "The Hurricane Restaurant and Bar" on Pass-a-Grille beach it is a 4 story place right on the beach and the 4th floor is an open roof bar that has spectacular views of the gulf and a perfect sunset bar. The Hurricane is really close to Ft Desoto State Park which is always top10 beach in US including Hawaii... All about 1hr 15 minutes from Disney area opposed to 45 minutes to Cocoa.

Daytona has a beautiful beach. This is a good time of year to go to the beach. We have been having some beautiful weather. Orlando is in central Florida so you can go east to Daytona or west to Tampa- St. Petersburg , which also has some nice beaches. Daytona is easier to get to from Orlando, so that would be my suggestion. Hope you enjoy your trip.
