Another thing Jefferson did while President was to purchase a large chunk of land from France in what today is called the Louisiana Purchase.
The purchase gave the United States 530,000,000 acres (828,000 mi² or 2,100,000 km²) more territory. Eventually all or parts of the states of Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Texas, North and South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, New Mexico, Nebraska, and Kansas were formed out of this territory. The purchase eventually led to the United States stretching east to west across the continent.
Aside from his role in helping the United States win its independence from England, Jefferson helped shaped the United States further with this purchase.

Architecture - TJ's interest in classicism and his home at Monticello influenced the early American "Federal" style of architecture. Philosophy - TJ's Enlightenment ideals like "of the people, by the people, for the people" "just consent of the governed" and "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" are the cornerstone of our national identity. Religion - TJ's Deist beliefs were a needed counterbalance to popular Puritan and Presbyterian narrow-mindedness
