I believe most of what you see on American Idol is real. I do believe that a lot of the singers are hired actors simply to sensationalize and boost ratings as was done on the Jerry Springer show.

In artistic terms, in regards to writings, movies, TV, etc - its called 'suspension of disbelief'... which can be difficult with modern TV...

American Idol has some sort of compelling element to it... desperate people willing to do anything to succeed... sort of the American Dream reinvisioned for an era where the American Dream is long dead...

actually, thats a very good question. because before they even go in with simon, paula and randy, they have to sing for 15 seconds in front of 20 people who tell them if they can go into the actual stage to be judged by randy, paula and simon. and some people over there have like the most ugly voices ive ever heard, and how the hell did they get in there. i mean sometimes i wonder if it was staged also, and if those people arent just actors and actresses.

Some is real, some just people acting out to be seen on TV.

Sometimes the producers (or their staff) tell people what they should do just for the drama.

The good singers. What's not real there? I enjoy listening to them.

After sampling a few of the so-called reality TV shows, I refuse to watch any of them... none of them are "real."

I don't watch it. Not because I don't want to- too many other important things going on at that time of the day.
