I've had a problem with my 92 miata. At first it had a hesitation and idling problem which was fixed because I had a bad MAF sensor. During that time the car was running rich. I'd get about 200 miles or less to the tank (that's really bad for a little miata). My plugs are new, oxygen sensor is good, and I believe the timing is fine too. But for some reason it's still seems to get bad mileage. I was told it can be the cat. I need input! Help!

If the catalytic converter is plugged up badly enough, it will create a back pressure in the cylinders, making the engine work harder to produce power. That takes extra fuel. It would have to be pretty badly blocked to get to that condition, however, if it is the same converter that originally came with the car, it is possible.

The only way that the catalytic converter will affect mileage would be if it has sintered (melted down inside). If it had, you would certainly notice a very poorly performing car. No power (at all), can't get enough engine speed to even shift gears, an odd "hoover" sound in the exhaust, and perhaps the engine might overheat a bit, and maybe ping.
Look for something else.

I don't know enough about your problem to be able to say for certain your catalytic converter is bad, but a bad one certainly can cause you to get really bad gas mileage. If the engine is running rich it could damage the cat and cause this problem.

getting a 4 gas analyzer samply from a smog station will tell if the engine is running rich still.scanning the car and comparing the readings to a good running car is also a way totell{unless you have a mechanic that knows what to look for}a bad cat would plug up and hold back engine rpm after it gets hot.
