I remember learning about his last year in APHist. It was in that area because not many women wanted to go to the far west during that time period (no friends, no big cities.....). Thus, they we're basically like "treasures" to the vast amount of young men who went to the west to start their new lives. Also, it was in one of the western states that women obtained their first right to vote (I believe it's Wyoming).

Answerer 1 got it right. In the West it was indeed Wyoming who let women vote first. I think it may be that in the West the women had to work just as hard as the men in doing a similar roster of things, so naturally there wasn't as much room for supposed male superiority. Also, the western states were hopeful to get more of a say in government so it helped if they had more voters. By having women vote, they doubled the number of votes.
