I am a Beauty Therapist and I would have to say that if you are worried about germs then definately use your fingers and not a sponge. You can wash your hands before you apply makeup whereas I doubt you would sterilize a sponge or use a new one each time- they contain an extreme amount of bacteria.
Apply it to your fingers and rub them together to emulsify and spread the foundation- this mixes any lose oils or pigments and you will then get a more even coverage. Using fingers also means you get that soft look rather than fluffy from a sponge which accentuates facial hair.

Sponge! Even though I've been guilty of using fingers to apply foundation, the oils present on your fingers not only give your face a greasier look, but they can cause you to break out.
Seriously, invest in a sponge.

Well I would say a cosmetic sponge so you don't get bacteria from your hand into your makeup. But personally I prefer a foundation brush.

it depends in what foundation you use. if its a liquid then id probably go with a sponge but if its something like the maybelline dream matte mousse then use your fingers most definately. thicker products tend to not blend well when applied with a sponge, just make sure your hands are clean and not oily.

SPONGE!!!...wet it slightly first then warm the foundation on your hand then apply to your face...moving away from the center. Follow with a light powder on a huge brush using the same technique....to the hand first then brush away from the center of the face.
Fingers are full of bacteria and dont spread evenly/

probably a sponge because then no bacteria or grease from your fingers will get on your face and clog up pores and such. but, if it doesnt look good when you use the sponge, you may want to use the fingers if coverage is better.

Always a sponge, you can get better coverage and control with a sponge,I dampen mine first and my makeup glides on so nice, and you can wash out the sponge and air dry them.

A sponge! You can buy a pack of small sponges at any drug store- your hands have a lot of bacteria that you don't want to spread on your face.

use a sponge. fingers might get dirt or other germs into pores and clog them up. if it doesnt look good with either, try a powder foundation, they go on more naturally and blend better.
