Well, for a lot of people, religion is a very important topic, and atheism is a religion. The bottom line is that people who DON'T beleive in a god don't understand why someone else does, and those who do beleive in a god don't understand how some people can't. So basically, it all stems from curiosity. A lot of people ask questions about other religions too.
The only reason it is so prevalent on Y!A is because the internet allows people to ask questions to the types of people they normally wouldn't have a lot of contact with, or feel comfortable asking questions to about something.

Some of the questions asked are by a few religious people intelligent enough to try and learn something, although most of them still have preconceived notions and do not understand what atheism actually is. As the saying goes, "Claiming atheism is a religion is like saying health is a disease." Most religious people are misinformed about atheists.
Most of those who blather (they pretend to ask questions) about atheism are closed-minded and infantile bigots who hide behind their words, the James Kopps of the internet. They would like to commit violence but wouldn't have the stones to do anything if they had to meet an atheist one-to-one and without a gun in their hands.
If you or anyone is asking questions to seek information, you have to listen with the view that the other person may be right. But that doesn't mean you have to abandon your own ideas to understand what someone else thinks, it merely means respecting others' views.
The sort of people who assume the other person is automatically wrong before ever saying a word (eg. Jerky Fartwell) might as well stick pencils through their eardrums and nails through their eyes. The ability to hear and read are wasted on them.

you might go over to beliefnet.com(if it is still there). the postings got so bad that they had to limit the atheist area to atheists only because others(mostly Christians) kept bombing the site. same thing happened in the Christian/religion area but not as bad. So beliefnet created a third area where the two sides could go at each other.
Why, you ask. Fear. bad memories of forced religious training. inability to think for themselves. non-conformity. selfishness. guilt. wanting to be accepted and loved(and saved). rebelliousness. being 'cool'. rejection of the idea of being 'told' how to think. ability or nonability to tune in to 'heart logic' as well as 'head logic'. listen to the voice within. atheists are as just much guilty of being "sheeple" as religious people.
find someone who is at peace with this topic and can discuss it intelligently and then you will no longer ask this question.

its a big controversial topic that is really pressing.
most people believe that atheists are idiots and don't deserve to live on this earth
while the select few others stand up for freedom of religion or being an atheist themselves.

the more religious a person is, the more intolerant he is, generally speaking, particularly with people who aren't religious.
