I don’t think so. I use cat5 and have been using them for a quite a while now for my network; it hasn’t given me a problem.

Not really but If you plan on transferring a tremendous amount of data on your local area network then you may want to look into cat6 and a gigabit switch. You do not need cat6 for gigabit though, Cat5e will work and get you those speeds

Cat 6 only becomes necessary at gigabit speeds. Most home routers only have 100 Mbs switches in them, so in that case it is not necessary to upgrade to Cat 6.
