They tell me I need a new Ethernet Card. They being at&t over the phone after I gave them my ip address. They assessed that just with that info! Can I test the ethernet card before I buy? There is a ? mark near ethernet when I check in "Devices". I think maybe I just need to download a driver!

You may indeed just need a driver. Chenk the site of the company that made the card to see if an up-to-date driver is available.

There should be an RJ-45 connector on the back of the computer or in one of the cards in the mainboard slots. (That would look like a telephone jack but has 8 wires instead of 4.) Unless you have a USB connection instead.

When you plug the live DSL cable from the "AT&T modem" into the RJ-45 jack, usually there is an LED that lights up, even if the computer is off.

Then boot the computer. Then insert the AT&T CD.

If it fails to find the DSL connection signal, then check the DEVICE list again. Copy the model # etc. from the screen (or look inside the computer for info stamped on the card itself). Use this to download a driver if needed and install it and try again.
