The Phoenix metro area is made up of a number of communities.
Tempe is on the east/southeast side of Phoenix. They share miles of boundry.
Home of Arizona State university, Tempe can be reached from Phoenix with city buses. A free tempe shuttle connects with east phx. lines to every part of metro phx.
From Phx. Sky Harbor airport, it's a three minute ride in to Tempe.

The Phoenix Sky Harbor airport is right on the edge of Tempe and is probably only a 4 mile easy drive from the Mill Ave/ASU section of downtown Tempe. Downtown Phoenix is probably about 6-7 miles from the Airport (to the West) whereas Tempe is just slightly to the East from the Airport.
