He's 5...the same age I was when I saw the episode 4. He's *really* into Star Wars but has only seen snippets from the movies. In a way, I'd like him to see the films in the story's chronology, but will he really like them as much if he sees the weak 1 and 2 first?

Start with '4' - preferably the real, original theatrical release... I was ten and saw it in the theatre... I still get shivers during the opening.

The original three are simply so much better - and 1-3 range from stupidly bad to 3's excessively violent ending... probably not appropriate for a five year old.

My 6 year old son is also a huge Star Wars fan, and he ended up seeing them in chronological order, not the order they were made. I didn't really plan it that way, it just worked out that way. Having said that, I think it was better because it made the story flow easier, instead of him having thousands of questions. If you let him see them starting with Episode I - The Phantom Menace to the end, he will see Anakin as a boy, grow into a Jedi, become Darth Vader, then die a hero. It is a little easier to explain how Luke and Leia are his kids, who Chewie is, where Yoda came from, and such. Hope your son likes the movies!!

Good question! Both ways have their merits.

If you show them in chronological order, he'll have the whole story from beginning to end. But he'll also know that Darth Vader is Luke's father by the end of 3 and it won't be much of a shocker later on.

If you show them in the order they were made, he'll have gotten the experience that just about everyone else in the world had. But he might get a little confused about the time jump when you go from episode 6 to episode 1.

Personally, I don't think it matters too much one way or the other. At five, he'll be remembering the fight scenes, light sabers, and funny characters more than anything else. He won't catch the subtle nuances of the story line. I say you show them to you in whatever way you would prefer to watch them.

Though parts of 1 and 2 weren't as good as the original trilogy, they are still good movies. However, if you want him to have the same experience you did with it, I'd start him out on Episode 4. The writing in the original trilogy was cleaner and the story was easier to follow. Another issue is the level of technology and special effects. The older movies were absolutely ground-breaking, but many of the effects in them don't look as good today after we've seen the newer ones. Any real Star Wars fan though understands that it doesn't matter how fast a TIE fighter is moving in Episode 4, because it was such a powerful movie.

If it were me, I'd start out on Episode 4-6, then go back and tell him he was going to see how it all started in Episodes 1-3. Hopefully he'll enjoy them as much as you did!

I would be remiss if I didn't sign this one with: May the Force be with you!

Do it order of production. Consider what it was like for you the first time, to see episode 4 and then the supprise in episode 5 of finding out that vader is lukes father. If you show him then in chronological order he will miss all of that, and consider what it would have been like for you if the first one you saw was episode 1.

The original movies are easier to follow and might give him more of an appreciation for the first 3 when he sees them. Personally, I don't think Revenge of the Sith is appropriate for a 5-year-old, so i would suggest letting him see the original movies and then waiting a while before showing him the rest. Besides, will your kid understand the political intrigue and back story of Episodes 1-3?

I think I'd show him the films in the order they were made. Episodes 1-3 just aren't very good and wouldn't be as interesting to a kid.

I would show them in the order that the story should go, and not the order that they were made. Especially if he is young..
