If your talking about viruses, adware, spyware and all of that. Usually norton anti-virus scans it and detects the files and you qurantine the files to get rid of them. Also Spy Sweeper updates and checks when you have adware and spyware and it deletes it. I think you can download some from free online but they usually only work for a few days.

If you have a good antivirus program, I suggest you run a full scan in Safe Mode. Hopefully, this will prevent any self-executing viruses from reloading.

For Safe Mode:

Turn your PC on or Restart
as soon as you see the black and white text, press and hold the F8 key. Continue to hold until you see a black and white menu. Safe Mode should be F3 or F5.

Run your antivirus program.
When finished, Restart.
Icons may be in disarray. Not to worry. Drag back into place.

Norton has a free on line check up! Start with the following URL and if it's not the correct one look further into Norton.

www.service.symantec.com

Hope this helps.

Also, you can use the the free security tool that come with the Yahoo tool bar. If you don't have it, download it and use it.

Good luck

If you meant contigious files, Do a defrag.
Otherwise, AVG Anti-Virus, hands down the best virus scanner EVER. It beats Norton.

i think it is contiguous files you are talking about. Not contageous. pleas right click on you your C: and choose properties.
Later go to the tools tab.
Click on the defragment now button
Wait for some time (0.5 to 1 hour) till the defrag completes
Repeat for all drives of you disk(D: E: etc..)

If you are talking about a virus, use a good virus scan. McAffee has one free for personal use (or at least they did).

If you are talking about adware or spyware, use adaware se and spybot s&d BOTH.
