Good question - my 4-year old daughter posed the same question. The fairy godmother said everything would return to "how it was" at the stroke of midnight. When Cinderella's dress is transformed and her coach is created out of a pumpkin, these things were existing items that were changed. Cinderella was barefoot in the garden when the fairy met with her, so the glass slippers seem to have been created from nothing. The only solution is that the glass slippers already existed elsewhere and were simply added to Cinderella's ensemble, not changed from something else. The fairy godmother did not add that borrowed items would return to their owner. Therefore, they could not change back to another object, could not go back where they came from, and Cinderella was stuck with both.

The fairy Godmother set it up that way.
How else would the prince find Cinderella so she could live happily ever after?
I've read many versions of Cinderella, some have 2 shoes, and some have only one. The whole point is that the Prince was so interested that he had EVERY female in the kingdom try on the slipper that was left behind. She had such a dainty, small foot that it couldn't fit just anyone. I think later versions added the second slipper, just to prove she was the one who lost it.

It's never explained why they remain glass. We know it's key to the storyline, so we can assume it was an intended part of the spell.
It's been a while since I heard/read/saw Cinderella, but my memory tells me both shoes remained crystal. The prince places the slipper on her foot, the step-mother refuses to believe it, Cinderella retrieves the second slipper and places it on her other foot completing the set.

Because her fairy god mother wanted her to keep them so she could remember the magic. She had two slippers, she kept one and the prince found the other. When the evil step mother realizes that Cinderella is about to try on the slipper she trips the man with the slipper and it shatters- then Cinderalla pulls out her other slipper...... and they all lived happily ever after = )

The slipper that remained on her foot turns back to an old shoe but the one dropped on the stairs remains glass. As far as I know, there is never any explaination given for this. But I figure the Fairy Godmother built in a safety so that the Prince would be able to find her later. Must be the romantic in me.

You ask one of the great philosophical questions of the modern era.
Why? I think it was part of the plan of the Fairy Godmother... the one way to force the two together was to make certain Cinderella had the chance to charm the prince... but the prince also had to have some way to track his true love.
Don't recall if there was one or two slippers though.

You didn't see the version with Drew Barrymore...
In this one, not only are the slippers not glass, but she's got the ugliest stockings when the prince comes to rescue her.
Not fantastic at all... I'd stick to the Disney version... which has no explanation...

Because the slippers were cindrella's mother's slippers and the fairy godmother just made them look slightly new
