The two were very similar authors writing in very different times, who were never alive when the other was, so it's hard to make an absolute judgment. They're both great. For those voting for Lovecraft, just remember that he read everything Poe wrote and was probably Lovecraft's greatest influence. (As for myself, I must admit I like the way Lovecraft's bizarre imagination could come up with just about anything.)

Edgar Allen Poe, for such a tormented soul he could write so vividly and describe things and places in such a way that only he could do it. Lovecraft was good, don't get me wrong but Poe was writing since childhood and the poems and stories he wrote were truly amazing. The Masque of the Red Death is written in such a way that with his descriptions you feel as if you were there in the story.ok i am going to stop now or ill keep going on and thats never good.

Tough question - Lovecraft wrote some really bizarre creepy monstrous stuff.
On the other hand, Poe simply wrote incredibly terrifying works, with no monstrous insanity needed.
So - Poe for simplistic, brilliant horror - simply classic.
Lovecraft - because I like the horrific element that he introduced.

I have to go with Lovecraft. Although I love them both. Lovecraft created such incredible worlds, and he brought some of these strange and horrifying creations to our world. He created an entire myth cycle. That's impressive.

I like Edgar Allan Poe better. His imagination is more far-ranging and he has a better sense of humor. Also, I think his mastery of language was better. His style is much more alive. He has a way of keeping a kind of dialog with the reader that keeps you in the story.

H.P Lovecraft by far. I love all his work. "Lurker at the Theshold" is a masterpiece. As well as the Cthulhu Mythos.
[O]utside the ordered universe [is] that amorphous blight of nethermost confusion which blasphemes and bubbles at the center of all infinity—the boundless daemon sultan Azathoth, whose name no lips dare speak aloud, and who gnaws hungrily in inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond time and space amidst the muffled, maddening beating of vile drums and the thin monotonous whine of accursed flutes
