I didn't know much about it--- then a friend brought his friend to my house who has it. I was intrigued because this guy was very funny, witty, and interesting--- but he would make very strange noises-- coughs, chokes, barks, growls etc. and jerk his head, He's in his 30's and has apparently learned to make these noises instead of saying rude words.
So I researched the syndrome on the Internet--- and what an amazingly interesting affliction it is. Most people with Tourette's are above average in intelligence (it is thought that Mozart had tourettes--- as well as some other very famous people). They are often hyperactive and extremely creative, but somewhat obsessive-- and they often have extreme physical tics and an uncontrollable urge to blurt out words or phrases--- frequently of a rude nature--- like about excrement or sex. Many people with Tourette's are somewhat absorbed in patterns--- spelling of words, word games, musical patterns etc.
No one yet knows what causes this, nor is there a cure.
The brain is a very strange, mysterious, and wonderful organ!!
This fellow has become our family friend and we all enjoy him quite a bit--- and he is able to laugh at his 'problem' and so are we. When he gets excited he barks--- which sends my young daughter into peals of laughter. Since we love him, there is no cruelty here--- we truly are accepting that this is just the way he is this lifetime--- and we try to laugh at all of our friends' and family's many idiosyncrasies.

The world can be harsh on people with Tourette Syndrome because they wrongly think that the person is in control of it--- and just wants to be rude or gross. Nothing is further from the truth. Compassion and tolerance and education are essential--

To wildraft--- When we have an unavoidable or incurable situation, we have two choices--- lamentation, or acceptance. With acceptance, I have found, no matter how grim things seem, we can laugh at our plight-- Life it short, and everything changes-- TS can be extremely funnny, if you love the preson and are laughing WITH them.

Tourette syndrome (also called Tourette's syndrome, Tourette's disorder, Gilles de la Tourette syndrome, GTS or, more commonly, simply Tourette's or TS) is an inherited neurological disorder with onset in childhood, characterized by the presence of multiple physical (motor) tics and at least one vocal (phonic) tic; these tics characteristically wax and wane. Tourette's is defined as part of a spectrum of tic disorders, which includes transient and chronic tics.

It's sprouts of verbal or physical spasms that are rooted in self loathing, anxiety, anger, and/or (my personal favorite ) lack of understanding the mysteries behind life. These spasms must result in negative or "looney" looking mannerisms such as; random cursing for no apparent reason, or random bodily jerks (very similar to ceasure mannerisms). These spasms may last for a split second or for a matter of minutes or even hours. Usually attempted to be controlled around the company of others.

I do. (why is that fun?)

It is characterized by motor tics and uncontrollable vocalizations (which often include profanity).

It is very sad to see someone with this.
And very startling....
I sometimes share an elevator with Tourette's patients (on their way up to the neurology clinic in my building). Can be very loud.

I knew what it was from reading, "The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat" and still didn't recognize that a man I worked with had it. Some people can control it for short periods, and others take medication for it.

You have a very nice way of putting it. You better watch it, the next thing you know they will report you for being too nice. They (liberals) love reporting people for no real reason.
