I am going to India next week and will be bringing light tops, capri pants, jeans & light khakis to wear with gold tone slip-on shoes. My goal is to pack very light so I can buy lots of stuff while I am there. My husband travels to India frequently (this is my first time) and has brought back wonderful bangles and scarves for me. My question is - is it okay for me to wear some of the beautiful scarves I already have with some of my madras-type tops? Is this considered inappropriate for a visitor? Is wearing a scarf on your shoulder or neck religious in nature? I certainly do not want to show disrepsect and would love to wear some of the bright scarves (they have little bells and bangles on them) with my tops.
If it is okay, are scarves only normally worn with a sari? Can I wear a scarf with a top and jeans?

I really would appreciate some advice. I am so excited to go, but nervous about what to wear. We are going to Dehli, Chennai, Bangalore and Chandigarh.

Since your husband has already visited India a number of times,he himself surely has some idea about indian way of clothing. But,still, rest assured, the clothes you are planning to bring over here are perfectly in tune with modern indian way of clothing.Scarves are generally worn by young people(including girls) here as a style statement, except if you are muslim.A lot of girls nowadays wear full-length/knee length skirts, but mini skirts are sure to raise some eyebrows over here.Only,if you are going into some religious place, like a temple or a mosque,be a bit careful about your choice of clothes.Pants with tops are most common form of clothing nowadays, other than sari(mostly worn by middle-aged or elderly people). Moreover, the cities you are visiting are some of the most rapidly developing cities in India, where these form of clothes are quite common now. So,hope you have a good time over here buying as much as
as you want!!!!!!

Why are you worried? Have a look at what other people are wearing, and then go and buy yourself some new ones. It really does depend where you are. Bangalore is pretty modern but I would advise wearing shorts or short skirts as you will feel that you are being stared at. Again i would buy your jeans there and if you are going to visit any temples it is advisable to carry a shawl as you should have your shoulders and arms covered. chennai is a little bit more modern about clothes but I did go in the sea with a wrap on when I was on my own

You can wear anything you like. There is no hard and fast rules. in Bangalore many girls and ladies wear scarves due to cold weather in the morning and evening and somewhat hot in day time, mainly to avoid getting the skin tanned. You can definitely wear to protect your skin and also to take care of your hair from dust. You can choose your own wear, jeans, sari, salwar or anything or any combination. do not worry for others.

Lastly a word of Caution - Be careful of the people of CHENNAI - They are all a whole bunch of Cheats. Best of luck-

scarves are a great idea in india, you can wear light clothes and cover up the tops of your arms and below your neckline for safety in the sun, and to avoid people staring at your bare skin, for example if you're wearing a vest top. it's always best to have a scarf if you're visiting mosques, some will insist you wear it over your head, but i just wore one over my head in all mosques because i felt it was more appropriate and showed more respect. it's tempting to dress the way you would in other hot climates, but you'll inevitably be more comfortable with more clothes on, once they're light enough. look at what the locals are wearing, its the best indication of whats suitable in a place.

Welcome to India. Scarves with tops is a good idea, no issues at all.
No disrespect in any way, in fact you can put the scarf on you head while visiting temples, it is a good custom.
