well...for the audtions you are mainly missing people making fools of themselves...but you also miss some great singers! for the main competition...you're missing the singers compete every week and watch as one becomes the next American Idol...it's a pretty good reality show with entertainment, drama, and laughter! :)

In short. Imagine a contest where they take hundreds of thousands of applicants. Pick the few dozen or so worst applicants with 0 talent and even fewer clues.
Pick the top few dozen best applicants with either tremendous or arguable talent and/or a strong tendency for masochism dished out by one sado-masochist, some other guy and a slightly over the top Paula Abdul.
They will pretend to "judge" the merit of the good, the bad and the ugly. Audience participation via telephone/web election is also used. Repeat as necessary, "Winners" are essentially enslaved for a couple of years afterwards in rigid contracting schemes and may not eat/sleep/breath without permission from some marketing drone, which for the most part they invariably tend to regret shortly after "winning" adding more melodrama!
Overrated doesn't begin to cover what this program is. Like most television these days, It's premised on the idea that TV should be as entertaining for your pets as much as you, so theres some occasional fast jerky motions coupled with previously mentioned sado-masochistic melodrama/comedy.
Billions and billion of people will get on with their lives just fine without ever having heard or seen it. Be one of them.

The auditions are hilarious as there are lots of people who really can't sing. The semi finals and finals are pretty good when you see the talent. And it's pretty fun to watch the talented turn into huge singing sensations right before your eyes.
The judges are quirky. Simon is crude and obnoxious. Paula is emotional and a little drunk. Randy is pretty cool.
If you like reality shows, it's definitely good for you.

besides "Dancing with the stars" it is probably the best reality show. It has talent, and it is hilarious, especially when the "losers" wonder why they are not getting anywhere.

this is just my opinion..
these people spend 1,000's upon 1,000's of hours preparing FOR WHAT???
just to have an a**hole spit in your face and demolish of all your dreams of ever being so meone big
