Tough question? anyone experence Sleep apnea and Seizures? I have a friend, who is now on a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine at night. He is over weight - but the real problem is he has had 3 Grand mal seizures in the last 6-months. He has completed a MRI no sign of a tumor or Epilepsy. He is looking for a cause and if the two are related. Any Help out there?

That would be difficult to tell. In order to be diagnosed with seizures, most people have to have an abnormal EEG - hopefully you have had this done. If it was abnormal, this does not cause sleep apnea. Increasing weight, especially in the neck causes sleep apnea. But, it is not impossible to believe that low oxygen levels caused by the sleep apnea could bring on a seizure.

He needs to get a cat scan done on him this checks out his brain waves as he sleeps. Sleep apnea is due to his weight and they can be related do to the medications he has to be on for the seizures he is having. He may need his med checked. You can get an active scar due to any head trauma. You don't have to just have a tumor/Epilepsy...Grand mals are the worst seizure get a new neurologist

Tell him to write down everything he eats each day and when he has these seizures he may be able to at least rule out food. He needs to lose weight that may help a little. Is there mold some where in the house or other chemicals like was crack ever made in his house or did some one clean the rugs with chemicals, it could be many things, tell him to write down every thing that has change in his home since before the first seizure.

sleep apnea maybe central(brain does not show cycles of rem & deep sleep 10 minute/20 minute cycles for 6 to 10 hrs .cycles & waveforms on eeg machine gonna be jagged & shorter.peripheral apnea will show inactivity or periodic inactivity of "lazy" chest & diaphram muscles.Your buddy likely has a mechanical variety of the disorder called obstructive sleep apnea, caused by the extra weight load on the muscles of respiration.what he eats sometimes factors in ,or should be considered by his doc,,no matter that the tests show. obesity, sleep disorder,seizure-like symptoms might be all related
