I was expecting a lengthy and thorough ultrasound but doctor seemed rushed. The whole thing probably lasted 10 minutes and he didnt offer any information unless I asked. When I asked if he could see any deformities or abnormalities he said no, but never even showed me the whole baby. The baby's bottom was facing us and her thighs and he immediately just said girl. Does this all sound normal? I left the room feeling disappointed... some of the pictures he gave me are hardly visible. There are 2 of her face, profile, and the rest I cant even tell what they are.
Anyone else experience this... maybe this is because I have medi-cal and they dont care as much...?

Medi-cal is similiar to medicaid but for california. They wont let me have another ultrasound and will not let me change OB's... but thats what I get for not being able to afford healthcare.

I had my 'big' ultrasound at 19 weeks, so just before I got on medicaid, but I'm sure that your insurance didn't have anything to do with your doc's awful bedside manner. The tech that I had then was great and we were there for about 25 minutes, if I remember right. My son was being very cooperative, so she was able to get all her measurements done and look at everything she needed to quickly. She said what she was looking at each time, and showed us on the screen where the lungs were, where each chamber of the heart was, all the different things like that. We got 4 pictures to take home, and each one was labeled as to what it was, but they were clear enough that I could remember anyway. We got a face picture, a profile, a foot shot (cause it was really cute, while she was looking, he stuck his foot up against where she was pressing), and she took a picture showing the gender (definately boy!).
Actually, though, one of the doctors that she worked for was hateful, and actually suggested to me on my first appt. that I should have an abortion, so that was my last appt. there.
The next group I went to was wonderful, even though I was on medicaid the whole time they knew me. They were much nicer and were more accessable than the other dr.'s, and they really seemed to care that you were doing all right. I even had the option of using a midwife with that group.
I don't think it has anything to do with medicaid, and if your doc is like that all the time, I would start scouting out other offices!
Good luck and congratulations!

My 20 week ultra sound was maybe 15 minutes and that was partially because the gal doing the ultrasound was called away for about 5 minutes or more. They didn't give me any information either but like you I had to just flat out ask questions.
With the baby's behind facing you the doctor would be able to tell but ultrasounds have been wrong a small fraction of the time. Just ask again later at another ultrasound. That's what I did to make sure mine was going to be a boy like they had said originally because I couldn't identify his boy parts.
I was on medicaid and the doc I had was great but the one with my first son was AWFUL! Your doc doesn't sound that nice either so I would keep an ear out for good ones in your area.

I just had my second one at 23 weeks and it took about 30 minutes. I have heard of people being treated differently when they use Medicaid or Medi-cal. I'm really sorry that happened to you. You should voice your concerns the next time you visit your doctor.

My 20 week ultrasound was very thorough and she went over everything and explained what she was looking for and told us step by step what was going on. The ultrasound lasted about 30 minutes or so and I felt very relieved after leaving. I am really sorry to hear that your ultrasound was not what you were expecting, they should have been more thorough no matter what insurance you have. I am only allowed 1 ultrasound unless I have major complications-gotta love insurance companies!

I am on medical assistance and go to Mayo Clinic, we had our "big" ultrasound earlier this week, it lasted about 45 minutes and we were able to see just about everything, the tech who was doing it was very nice and helpful. She even took the time to go back after looking at everything else and get us some really really good profile pics. We had a student attending as well and after the formal ultrasound she got on and spent about another 15 minutes practicing her techniques, so we got to see even more of the baby.
I am sorry your doctor sucked and that you had a bad experience.there could be many contributing factors, regardless it was unfair to you.
