I've been living in San Francisco for 4 years, and my best advice it to look on www.craigslist.org
Housing is pretty expensive here, but it's affordable if you find a roommate and/or move into a flat that's rent controlled.

1. The high prices were really "caused" by the tourists. "Oh the great views! Oh by the beach! Oh....!" 2. San Francisco is small with lots of people. so land is expensive. 100 miles away, in Sacramento, you can find a one-bedroom house/duplicate for only $800. In SF, that same house can cost at least $1700. Advice: I would advice NOT to rent apartment/condo in a high-rise building. For that same price, you can possibly get a 2 bedroom from a private renter. If you really want cheap, either have roomate or rent an "in-law." most/some in-laws are ground floor so it's not going to be "bad."
