Stockton, without question.
They both averaged about 14-18 pts per game in their prime, but assists and getting their teammates involved was the forte of each.
If you split John Stockton's career into a "1st half" and a "2nd half", you'd have TWO Hall of Famers.
Stockton was also much more durable.
He started out playing every game of his first 5 seasons, then after missing 4 games in his 6th season, he played all 82 games for the next seven years in a row. He played all 82 games in 12 of his first 13 seasons.
And after the strike season of 1999, Stockton played all 82 games during each of the last 4 seasons of his career.
Stockton played all 82 games in 16 of his 18 full seasons, and also played all 50 games of the 1999 strike season. That's 17 of 19 seasons without missing a game. (He missed 4 games in 1990 and 8 games in 1998),
Nash has missed more games during the last three seasons than Stockton missed in his 19 year career.

That's a tough one, but I like Nash's style a bit more. Stockton was great in the pick and roll and half court style...perfect for malone. nash is an up tempo play maker who dishes out of the break much of the time. I just gotta go with nash. It will be interesting to see how they compare when nash retires.

John Stockton, because he played really good defense and was tougher. But Nash is on his way with the toughness, but has a ways to go on defense.

Steve Nash at his best (2 MVPs) is better than Stockton at his best.
However, with that being said, Stockton has had the better career by far (career assist & steals leader)...

John Stockton is a legend so he wins by default. He has accomplished more. I'm sure by the time Nash retires he will have accomplished more than Stockton.

think of it as maverick vs iceman.
one is a spectacular intuitive playmaker - "flies by the seat of his pants". the other is "ice cold, no mistakes." - plays by the book, deviating only on occasion to take a cheap shot at a rival.
So it's got to be Nash, of course. Besides the cheesy movie analogy, he's a 2-time MVP, going on 3 this year. If he were to accomplish that feat, how could he not be the best ever? I'd put him with Oscar Robertson or Magic Johnson, well ahead of Stockton.

Steve Nash is way better. He puts his team in a position to win night in and night out. He is a great passer and he is a pure shooter. He makes his teammates better in every way possible.
