Eat dinner atleast three hours before bed time. A digesting stomach will keep you awake.
Sleep in a pitch black room with NO noise.
Wind down 1 hour before bed - read a book, listen to music.
If you watch t.v. do not watch anything stimulating that will get your head spinning. Stay away from the news and anything depressing or violent.
Do not exercise just before bed, although, exercise during the day will help you fall asleep at night. Exercise helps you release pent up energy so you are nice and drained before bed.

Proper nutrition, exercise, watch what pills you're taking if any, don't drink alcohol before sleeping or use it to get to sleep, stop caffeine consumption early in the day, relax and slow your body down before you lay down to sleep.
