Hell if I tipped my mechanic I would be tipping my self.
I have had tips anywhere from $5 to $200,
I will never ask for a tip, that is just rude and UN professional.
However if you feel the need to tip, think about it like dinning out.
Good service and food justify 20%, crappy people and service justify 0%.

Then you are what I would call a GOOD customer. There are too many people out there who don't appreciate the service that they receive from their mechanic. Too many people have the perception that all mechanics are "wallet emptiers". This simply is not true. YOU would probably be the customer that your mechanic will bend over a*s*s backwards to help you out when your vehicle lets you down. Unfortunately, people like you are far and few between. And to the poster that says they charge $60 to $80 per hour, the MECHANIC is lucky to see $15 to $20 per hour of that.

The only way I would/hae ever tipped my mechanic was when he worked late on Christmas eve putting a starter in my truck.
Otherwise, NO. I would NOT tip a mechanic as a general rule.
I think your continued business is tip enough.

i work at a dealership as a tech. I tell you what 5 dollars or 10 dollars
means the world to the tech by showing that the customers really care, or just simply just saying thank you. I bet you know know what i am talking about and i bet they will remember your name and the car you drive and i promise they will go the extra mile.
