I understand what you're thinking. In Buddhism, every life is precious.
Here are my three rules about bugs.
1) If they are attacking me, no matter where they are, then they are fair game for killing.
2) If it's in the house, they don't belong there so I take them outside (if it's a beneficial arthropod, such as a spider), or kill them (like a fly, beetle, etc.)
3) If it's outside the house, then it's okay and I leave it alone. If it's really fascinating, then I might capture it or take a picture of it or take it to lab and look at it under the microscope. However, if it's outside the house and #1 happens (see above) then I can swat at it.
I work on fruit flies, and dissect them a lot, so my bad karma dream is that I will be torn apart by huge tweezers, ugh :-)

What I know of is that mosquitoes hate clover and thyme oils. You think you could spray one of those oils around on trees or grass? It helps ward off bugs up to 3 hours they say and if you happened to see any inside the house I open bottles of clover oil and insert a wooden stick into each and place them where kids couldn't reach to help spread the smell in rooms. We've been safe ever since I used that method of getting rid of bugs. Grandma says planting Basil all over your yard wards them off. Are you sure Granma? :) She says I assure you won't see none. Ok! I also read that Melia azedarach trees help clear yards of bugs such as mosquitoes but only when in flower. It has beautiful blue flowers. But cleaning is best plus grass trimming. No pain no gain darling.

No. I think killing harmful insects is not that bad. Look at those poor people who are dying because of malaria, plague and other diseases. If you place mosquito before human being in fear of karma, that's up to you!

When I kill them it is in a motion away from me and anyone else around, so a foot coming down will not know the true target.

i believe in karma, but i dont fear a giant squishing me. im sure ive done something worse in my life than squish a bug. i like to play with salt and slugs. and i love bug spray for spiders. (i live in a town that has a huge problem with brown recluse spiders whose bites are poisonous and i have a daughter who likes to play with bugs so i kill the spiders so she doesnt get bitten). but im sure thats probalby not the worst of it
