It has been said it is loosly based on Diana Ross and The Supremes, but it's not a story about them. It's mostly fictional.

Well, the movie DreamGirls is based on the broadway play, and at the time that the play came out it was believed that it was based more or less on the Supremes, especially as the play came out quite a long time ago. It came out much closer to the time when the Supremes were popular.

Without a doubt! Ok - Deena Jones is Diana Ross, Effie is Flo Ballard and whatever the other girls name was, she is Mary Wilson. Same things happened to The Supremes as The Dreams, sort of. Diana Ross had an affair with Berry Gordy as Deena did with the Jamie Fox character. In Dream Girls, however, it is Effie who has his baby. In real life it was Diana Ross who had Berry Gordy's baby. Another difference, in Dream Girls Effie (Flo) gets her 2nd chance and gets her life together. In real life, Flo Ballard died while on welfare and living in poverty. She never got the validation her talent deserved.

The film's story and characters are loosely based on real-life Motown counterparts, much as "Citizen Kane" is loosely based on the life of newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst.
