I want to know what 'throat-clearing' means when done casually on the street. At least 1 in 3 passer by's clear their throat when they pass by me. First I thought I was being paranoid but my friends have assured me it doesnt happen that often normally. I dont dress or act outrageously so I was wondering if you could give me any ideas to why passer bys would feel compelled to clear their throats, what does it mean in non verbal communication?

throat clearing happens when someone is uncomfortable with answering something truthfully, trying to avoid someone or something
It might not be because of you at all
could be something in the persons life is bothering them and its a coincidence that you are nearby at that time

Throat clearing is a habbit most of the time, i have heard a lot of people do this on buses and for know reason, it also could be Hey im Here take notice, and the few geniune ones are just clearing there throats from Salvia.

All it probably means is that the throat-clearer probably has a huge hunk of snot lodged right there at the throat and nasal passage. Man, I hate it when that happens...You just happen to be there and notice. A lot of throat clearing is going on these days - after all, it is flu season.

You friends are misinformed, or are misinforming you. A passer by clearing his throat as he passes you is no cause for even notice, unless you are paranoid; naturally, or drug induced. Whichever, the problem seems to lie with you.

Your friends have you believing that total strangers are clearing their throats just because of YOU? Really, be realistic... people clear their throats... dry, cold, allergies, and lots of other things just happen. Sounds a little paranoid actually...lol

Perhaps they fancy you or want to kill you or you are paranoid.
I have noticed that people also only cough in the cinema or the theatre.
