Dizzy is on Aussie drivers side with engine number just behind it. I am thinking it is not a Blu Flame 6 (235) as it just looks different and pretty original. Engine mounts appear to be in a different place too (lower)! Any help is appreciated.

The standard engine was a 235 cubic inch "Blue Flame" six. Hear is what I'd do to find the truth. Remove the valve cover and if it has a shaft where the rocker arms pivot it's the 235 motor. If the rocker arms are individually mounted, one stud for each with stamped steal rocker arms it could be either a 230, 250, or the truck 290 ci. motor. If you can copy any motor numbers at all your local Chevy dealer (parts counter) can tell you what is. Don't be disappointed if it is a 230 -290 ci. motor. It has 7 main bearings and the oil system and is a fully pressurized lubricated. The original blue flame has an oil bath air cleaner with a splash oiling system. There is no oil pump in this system.

I've got a '54 Bel-Air 4 door. In the US, the only factory engine was a 235 six cylinder. Its distributor is on the passenger's side. Left side if facing the car. It was originally painted blue. All 235s had a road draft tube, a single pushrod cover, and fuel pump on left side of engine. Manifolds are on right side of engine. Starter is on left side, behind and below distributor. 235s did not have spin-on oil filters. They had an optional oil filter canister that mounted to the intake manifold.

Hopefully this is enough to ID the engine. It may have been repainted, or a different color in Aus.

1954 Chevy Engine

All old motors were painted a color to identify the brand/size:
Chevy Blue 6 Cyl 1951-62
Chevy Red 8 Cyl 1956-57
Chevy Orange most all V8s

Engine could have been rebuilt and repainted. Looking at a motor would tell you if its a 6 or 8.

if it has 6 spark plugs on one side it probably is the 235 or possibly a 250inch 6 cylinder
if it has 4 plugs on each side it is a V8 and the cubic inches could be any where from 265 to 454.

google "1954 chevy 6 cylinder", the first listing from Hemmings lists several engines per engine codes.
