The theme seemed to be a variation on the old King Kong movies. And since the game would be played in English-speaking arcades, they needed another word to describe this new villain. Something that described how stubborn and inflexible this creature was. Something that just wouldn't do what it was told. They already had one animal. What other animals were known for being notoriously hard to deal with? Mules... camels... donkeys...

Ohhh. I know this one.

It was a typo. It was originally going to be called Monkey Kong, but they messed up and didn't catch the error in time. True story. ; )

it was supposed to be monkey kong, but the japanese company scewed up the translation. it would have cost too much to fix it, so hence we have donkey kong.

Who knows? The Japaneese invented the game so maybe something got lost in the translation.
