Is a doctor(MD) that asses a person's mental state and prescribe medications accordingly. One would see one for depression,anxiety, and other mental conditions.
A psychologist is the doctor that you talk to(Not necessarily an MD) about you problems.

Psychologist = talk
Psychiatrist = medicine

Psychiatrists deal with organic disorders of the brain, and are actual trained doctors and can prescribe medications.

Someone with a chemical imbalance, like a schizophrenic, would need to see a psychiatrist for treatment.

Psychologists, on the other hand, may have a doctorate, but aren't medical doctors and can't prescribe medication. Instead they are mainly trained in how the human mind processes situations and can help you work through situations that may not require a psychiatrist.

That said, many psychiatrists end up doing psychology work in the process of treating their patients.

Someone would go to see a psychiatrist when they are suffering from a serious case of depression or something like that because a psychiatrist has the same training as a doctor and can legally prescribe prescriptions.
A psychologist can only listen and give advise to their patients.

A person sees a psychiatrist for all kinds of things. Depression, anxiety, difficulty dealing with stress, post traumatic stress disorder, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder....I could go on and on.

A psychiatrist can do therapy, and can also prescribe psychiatric medication if the condition warrents.

My opinion is they take your money, keep you coming for unreasonable lengths of time, bring up crap that has nothing to do with why you are there and create more problems than they solve...they just dont help...
much better to go to a social worker, cheaper more direct and to the point, I have been to both and there is no comparison...just my opinion...good question..
