i want to buy a dress that costs $75.
but I dont have any money.
so i borrow $25 from 3 frens.
and then 25 x 3 = 75.
that will make up $75.

I enter the shop to buy the dress.
but the shop owner says $70 is enough.
so the shop owner handed me the dress and also return me the extra $5.

okay now with the $5, i return each of my fren $1.
after returning each of them $1, im only left with $2 right. (5 - 3 = 2)
then since i return 3 of them $1, that means i still owe each of them $24.

now 24 x 3 = 72
plus the extra $2 left, i only have $74.
so where did the $1 go??
it is supposed to be $75

Think think think.. =]

Amount borrowed is $25 x 3 = $75

U Return $3 so u still own $72.

Cost of dress $70 + $2 u still have, it is still a total of $72. Thus still own $72.

U cannot add the amount u own to the amount u still have.

There is no $1 problem.

There is no missing dollar. You have given the shop keeper $70, your friends $3, and you still have two. Yes, you still owe each of the friends $24, which is $72 (the $70 you spent plus the $2 you ave left). The "trick" is that there is no reason to add the 2 to the $72 you still owe. The $2 is PART of the $72 you still owe.

This one is so old...

24 * 3 = 72 is what you owe.
72 = 70 + 2 (what you owe is cost of the dress AND the money you did not refund).

The issue is that the $2 should not be added to the debt, because it is part of what you owe. Adding a number that should be subtracted is what is happening here.

25 x 3 = 75

75 - 70 = 5

5 / 3 = 1.66666. . . (one and one third)

You gave each of your friends $1 back

That leaves you with 0.66666. . . x 3, which is 2.

You are adding a debit (the $24 you owe each friend) to a credit (the $2 which is left). This is not quite as deconstructive to a math problem as dividing by zero, but almost. :-)

ok you handed them 3 dollars total back hence why you owe 72

(72 + 3= 75)

the other 2 dollward you kept out of the 5 dollars change is surplus to the 75 becuase you did not give it back....

the two dollars is part of the seventy two. $72 plus the dollar you gave each on 3$ equals 75
