The only time I've ever been asked to do that was right before surgery. The anesthesiologist was a great guy...I mean so funny. So he's doing everything in his power to relax me and take my mind off of what was happening. It truly worked. The last thing he said to me before I went out was..... "Ok, now recite the alphabet backwards and by the time you get finished the surgery will be finito." (then put the mask over my mouth) I remember saying "Z...Y... X......." and that was all she wrote.
When I came out of it hours later, he walks in my hospital room and said, "You really sucked at that alphabet thing you know?" lol

I actually tried it one time, gave it my best shot, but the policemen doing the sobriety test were not the least bit impressed with my interpretation.
