Hi, i have an online shop where i only accepted credit because i have a credit processor. How ever a custom asked if i could take a check. Now i dont normally allow checks but i did this one. They have sent me the check and right away i felt it was fishy so i took it to the bank for them to take a look at it. I have never had a check processed before so i wanted to be safe. No items have been shipped to them. So i have no loss. The bank agreed it was fake and they have a copy. I am taking the original to the police tommorrow what items would i need to take. Should i bring the emails that the "customer" sent and would it cost me for the report? also the bank told me to send an email to them telling them their products have been shipped to see what they say and i did that. was that wrong?

No. Theft is going to come out of someones bank. I know someone who went to jail because they tried to cash a check that was fake so luckily you were smart enough to stop it before you may have got in to trouble. They said they didn't know it was fake but there is to much that leads me to think other wise . But that's fir the courts to judge. Take and copy your e mails and all the information they will need. We all have to pay for what we want or we should, There is a right and wrong. Laws are there for a reason. I believe in the laws just not the people who are suppose to enforce them. I've seen the corrupt side.

Go to the police and give them the email address and their mailing address and see if you also have their ip address from the email.

The bank suggestion is to help you trap them and not alert them before the police get to them. There may have been other victims before you.

You did exactly right.

You have to be careful about things like that. Clark Howard tells the story on his radio show about a guy who takes a suspicious check to the bank and the teller tells him to endorse and deposit it any to see if it clears. The guy winds up in jail and all kinds of nasty things happen to him. The link is here:
