I just dont get the book maybe Im slow. Does anyone know why it is important and why? I would like to know maybe I missed the hidden meaning or something.

Hmm... I beleive that the Iliad is so famous for mostly just being a great story. It is also the source of most of Greek mythology. Most or all of the Greek gods and goddesses (as well as the heros) are derived from the Iliad and/or the Odyssey. It was a very influential epic, as well as a beautiful peice of poetry.
