Do you mean in the very middle, or in the middle of the front seat? Either way, it would make for a very awkward position to control the car from in traffic.

There's a buttload of cars with the steering wheel in the center, but most of them are race cars. Some are licensed for the street, though. The problem is that the engine in most front engine cars is in the center, so the steering equipment needs to be either to the right or left of the engine. There are a lot of other good reasons, some are even here on the Answers board.

I never thought about it, but it would seem that since most automobiles seat two people in the front, putting the steering wheel in the middle would put it between the two seats, which is not convenient for the driver.
The steering wheel is normally on the left in American vehicles because we drive on the right side of the road. This gives the driver a better view of the clearance required to avoid hitting on-coming traffic.

To make room for a the front passenger really. If it were contained in the centre.. you've got a lot room both part of the motive force to in superb condition yet another adult also makes it a lot less stressful to get into and out of the motorcar. decide the gap between you and on coming site visitors etc..

It would be a complete waste of space, since the entire front row of seats would be taken up by just the driver, because you couldn't comfortably seat a passenger to the left or to the right of the driver.
That is the only reason.
Cars could easily be built that way. It just doesn't make sense space wise.

It would make it harder for the driver to get in and out.
Visibility would suffer:
Visibility of oncoming traffic would be worse.
Visibility through a side mounted rear view mirror would be very bad.

The driver wouldn't have a window ledge to rest an arm on.
