First: express "500" in lowest terms...

V`(5*100)

V`(5*10*10)

V`(5*5*5*2*2)

Sec: when you have a number repeated twice & your finding the square root --- the pair of numers become one...

5(2)V`(5)

Third: you have one "5" left in the radical sign & combine the outer terms...

= 10 V`5

Not sure what your teacher wants
sqrt(500)=sqr(100*5)=sqr(100)*sqr(5)
=10*sqr(5)
10sqr(5)

or on a calculator it is
22.3606797.......
