Do time zones help account for differences in ideology accross the United States?

Does the fact, for example, that the West Coast is latest time zone in America, influence the fact that it tends to be more independently minded than the rest of the United States? Other example abound.

I doubt that it's the time zones. I think it's probably more because the United States was settled from east to west, so the west (wherever that was at any point in history) was always the place where the most liberal, frontier-sy people were.
