I am not sure what this question has to do with Australian NZ taxes (!) but June is pretty much mid winter so there should be plenty of vacancies. I have two suggestions- (1) make a booking as everyone wants to some cash coming in during the off season so you will probably get a good deal for booking in advance (2) try "Wotif"

to check out all the accomodation and price ranges for where you are going.
Wotif has all of the best deals but only for two weeks from the current date so you could either use it to determine which places are in a suitable price range or alternatively might save even more money by waiting and taking one of the hot deals via wotif.

Doesnt matter.The earlier you book the cheaper it will be.
