(THIS GOES FOR A DOG) Not exactly, they just do things when they hear the phrase or word that is associated with that action. For example, if you tell them to roll over, and you show them how to roll over, if you keep telling them to roll over, they will soon associate "roll over" with the action of rolling over. They don't understand English, so when we say a phrase, it's just jibberish or a sound to them, but like I said, they associate that particular sound, or jibberish, with a specific action. This only works if you want to teach them tricks. If you want them to stop crapping all over the place, you can't force them to hold it in if you say "don't poop" or something like that. All you have to do is firmly say "no" when they do something wrong. They will associate the firm "no" with something they shouldn't do, if they're thinking of doing it or already did. So if you keep telling them "no" when they're about to pee on the floor or when they're doing something wrong, they'll be trained to not do something wrong. One important thing is to NEVER hit your dog, no matter what.
Just to summarize, your dog won't understand you, just associates phrases with actions.

Yes she does, when I ask her to tell me when one of my family members is coming, etc,,,, she'll look at the window, then come get me in my room to tell me. One time, I had something covering the kitchen window, and she got on top of the kitchen table, and then couldn't figure how to get off to tell me we had company. She's alsmost 100 pounds btw. ha ha. She's full of personality.

I think so. Sometimes my cat talks back.
When I ask my dog if he has to go to the bathroom he walks to the back door.
So yes.

There's no way. I have tried and tried, to no avail, to train my cat through talking to him. I told him when I let him outside, "Now dont go too far." Well, he went t o Cleveland. In my car. And its a standard...
