Five hundred shots a day? That sounds pretty good to me. I want to improve for try outs in a few months, and I want to be really good.

500 shots minimum

should be doing this a couple times a day if you only have a few months

get a rebounder and if you aren't making most of them you might want to scoot in

should also start running and bringing up your conditioning level

Of course it is important shoot as many as possible.. but I wouldn´t pick a number, it is much more important that you vary the shooting practices, different positions, make shots out of dribbling, put a chair and practice straight jum shots, if you are out of breath, go to the free throw line and shoot free throws, try to practice with a partner, who passes you the ball that you can practice catch and quick release. It is important that you practice as close to real game situations.

I don't know if you should put a number on it. Just make sure you practice game situations like catch and shoot or pull up jump shots.
