It depends on what you might be cleaning off of it....
Most laptop keyboards are low maintenance, but things like sodas, milk and other fluids will require a replacement board or worse, expensive repair.
For general cleaning however, a small compressed air can and a slightly soapy damp dishcloth will work just fine ;)

It would have been a much better answer if you have mentioned the Laptop Company and your Model Number.
Then i would have searched the internet download the service manual and given you the exact instrucation.
But the easy way out is to Turn the Latop Over and shake it for 5 min or so. This will make sure that all the heavy particles would come out and fall down.
Next you can use compressed air or a soft brush which ever is available to clean the lighter particles.
If you have a sony or dell laptop you can easily remove the keys clean them and put them back.
But be very careful in doing so.
Laptop's from Toshiba have a separate keyboard which can be easily removed by unscrewing 2 screws. Then you can clean the keyboard and screw it back in place.

I think some of the keyboards can be actually removed using the screws that are placed between them, you can read the manual that was enclosed alongwith the laptop and it will contain the information, if you can remove the keyboard then you can clean it in a better way.

You can actually go in the computer department and pay like a few bucks and get compressed air cans, it has a straw like thing on the end of it, so u can get down in your keys and spray your keyboard while holding your keyboard sideways for the particles to come out.

turn the laptop upside down and shake it, all the dust and particles will fall out.
you can also take a clean cloth and wipe the keys to clean them.

Use a vacum cleaner for dust and any liquid cleaner for surface.
