There are so many people who come to the U.S. , live modern lives and still find it difficult to stand up to their parents and marry whom they want.

Why do they let their parents and families run their lives?

I've seen many lives ruined because they married people they didn't love. Some were even in love with someone else and still went along with the family's decision.

Of course, if the parents have physically hurt the child, have threatened to disown the child, or could kill the child, it's all understandable.

I'm not sure, though, that the parents are always doing these things.

I also think there is a difference between respecting your parents and marrying whom they want and getting the career that they want you to have.

Many cultures teach there children to do what they say by beatings and tortured, but some children get older and refuse to do what there parents tell them to do.In those cases the family usually disown them and in some cases they even kill them.
so many children from other cultures just figure that it's best to listen than to go against the grain.

Ah as you said it's all about cultures and upbringings. Individual statements are still made through-out this whole thing though, so it's actually up to the person, whether or not he/she will live up and be consentful of everything the parents say. Just remember that eras change, and the more modern the world gets, the less and less people will be in that position.

I sure hear you on this one. I married a man who's mama still breast fed him... lol! She completely ran his life.. finances the works. We were married for 13 years, his family treated me like crap, controlled him, and he never would stand up to them. I even caught him talking to them on the phone saying bad things about me to please them. When we divorced they were ecstatic. How can you be ecstatic to know that your grandchild will be raised in a broken home. That is just messed up!
I will never understand it.... why he would let them run his life and even ruin his life like they have in the past and still do today.

JUST A NOTE: i must make comment after reading other responses, my ex was in no way beatin or tortured... manipulated yes, but that is completely different.

It is one of the 10 commandments to obey and respect thy parents. A lot of people in the traditional cultures still believe in that.
