And for those that have them, how long should they last on a typical sedan or compact car? Also, do they start slipping like the other belts when they're about to go bad or do they just one day go out and lock your engine up?

FYI one of my cars is a 2001 Hyundai Elantra and the other is a 2006 Kia Spectra 5. The Elantra has a few belts slipping which got me worrying about the timing belt. I'm not worried about the Kia, I know I've got plenty of time before worrying about it.

Almost every car on the road has a timing belt or chain, with a select few high end performance cars using gear drives instead. Belts and chains wear and stretch over time. Usually the time to start being concerned is around 80,000 miles or so, sooner if the engine is driven hard. If the belt breaks or slips, it can cause expensive damage to the valve train and head.

The children acted naturally with no expectations of the cat and just let him be himself and they apparently had a ball with him. Your cat is not getting what he needs from you and your husband. Apparently the husband is gone all day and then hides away when he is home doing 'artistic' stuff. Not much time for the cat is there? How much 'quality' time do you spend with the cat on a regular basis? If you cannot give the cat what he seems to need; another cat would not be a bad idea. I personally, prefer two cats at a time. The spend a lot of time together and actually let me sleep at night because they are entertaining each other and not romping all over my bed keeping me awake. If you get another cat, get a spayed female.

Some cars rely on a timing chain and other rely on gears. They need to be replaced far less often. Also, whether belt ,chain, or gears they can go out slowly or all at once. It's not something to waste time worrying about.

Yes, plenty. Like my 2007 Toyota Camry. It has a timing chain that never needs replacing.
