Is it that they really are that weak or that they just don't take threats seriously enough? Or it is something else?

(I'm talking about their recent history, like last 150 years, up until present)

They have depend on others to fight for them and save their "selves" in most wars and conflicts they have been involved in. The problem is not enough white flags to go around for their forces.

The French don't have a military problem now, and though they really stunk things up in the Franco-Prussian War, they've not had much of a military problem in the interim. They have serious problems with political control of the military and got kicked in both world wars because of it. And then there was the mutiny by the Legion Etranger, but that's a somewhat peculiar political force itself.

Do the other 1000 years before count?

P.S. whatever they are doing, their culture and cities are intact unlike the Germans. Who lost 500 years worth of their culture and civilization in the last century. Germany was ruined, France is intact.

So who was really smarter?

just listen to chirac today. "Iran having one or two nuclear weapons is no big deal. as soon as they launch one tehran will be no more." translation... until someone kills millions of people its not really a big deal.

I would think that this petty hatred of France would get old after awhile.
