On the farm we had two methods that we used to get rid of the little pests. Traps and poison.
We used cyanide capsules that were activated by the moisture in the soil. It works great by killing all of them in the nest, but it may not be that readily available, and must be handled very carefully (ie: wear gloves and respirator).
Good traps work well too, but only get one of the beasties at a time. Find a pretty freshly dug hole, locate the opening, and dig a fairly good sized hole around it. Place the trap as deep inside as you can. Remember to anchor the trap with a good heavy wire attached to a piece of rebar pushed deep into the ground, or the critter will drag it into the hole and you'll lose it. Finally, take a large clod and cover the opening, so the gopher doesn't trip the trap by pushing dirt towards the open hole. You will probably have to set a trap in the same hole complex several times since their nests can house 1/2 dozen or more critters.
From your description it may take some time to remove the problem, and if the surrounding properties are infested also, you will have to keep vigil for them spreading back onto yours. Good luck.

Put chili peppers into the holes, and they will probably leave. If not, try putting Juicy Fruit gum, which they eat and get sick on, or chocolate laxatives (Ex-Lax) which will cause a reaction that they will forever associate with your yard, and avoid in the future. Another thing that works without killing them is to put a little transister radio down the hole, and set it to a rock station. Honestly, they don't mind other music, but the rock music drives them away. You don't have to turn it up loud, either. Hope this helps.

I've learned from this guy's newsletters...but forget his website's address... go to iBtraveling.com and look for "plant tips" on the left hand side near the bottom. Sign up for his newsletter or check out his web site. I seem to remember in one of his newsletters that you need to get rid of the grubs so there won't be any food for the gophers and moles and such that dig tunnels in your yard. This guy has a lot of great ideas for your garden in his newsletter and he won't spam you either.
Good luck!

Double-barrel shotgun. Does the trick every time. Find a hunter that needs some target practice. If you can't do that, call your local extension agent. I'm sure they will be able to help you. Good luck. I have moles so I know what you are going through.

moth balls down their holes I've been told work. You can also get a mole trap, you set it up over one of their mounds and when they pass by it 6 steel spikes spring into the ground. they are hard to get completely rid of, you have my sympathies and good luck.

You cant use dynamite but I firecracker might work. Just keep filling and blocking their tunnels with dirt and rocks. Don't use a BB gun though. It WONT kill them. I know from personal experience. It just suffered until we put it out of its misery. =(
